TV ‘shows’ must go on!!!

Ever wondered, how many TV shows have shut in past 2 months? Let’s put some light on it and see who replaced who!

Off Air Shows Replaced By
Maryada (Star Plus)
Sasural Genda Phool (Star Plus) Ek Dusre Se Karte Hain Pyar Hum
I Love My India (Sab TV) Bhai, Bhaiyya aur Brother
Ram Milaye Jodi (Zee TV) Phir Subah Hogi
Choti Bahu (Zee TV) Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke
Havan (Colors) Kairi – Rishta Khatta Meetha
Laado (Colors) Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha
Zindagi Kahe.. Smile Please (Life Ok) Aasman Se Aage
Meri Maa (Life Ok) Amrit Manthan

Above all shows ended with very low ratings, except Sasural Genda Phool. But Sasural Genda Phool team along with Star team felt it’s good to end up a show on a high note rather than unnecessarily dragging it. But, one just cannot blame ratings for the same. There are a lot of other issues to be dealt with while making a TV show. And to shut it, is a big decision for channel as well as the producers. Soaps are such, one track doesn’t work and the story is changed. After a while, the original plot or the crux of the show is lost. This has been witnessed in a lot of shows. And that could be one of the major reasons for them to shut. Moreover, creatives can’t experiment a lot these days as they all have to work with lot of limitations.

Also, as Imagine TV shut, its all 5 shows shut too! 14 shows being shut in a span of 2 months and a few new ones have already replaced them. So, what happens next? A few new ones are in pipeline which will be launched post IPL; such as, Byaah Hamari Bahu Ka, Indian Idol and post that KBC on Sony TV. Also, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’s next season is around the corner, but this time on Colors.

There are rumors about Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya (Star Plus) and Shubh Vivah on (Sony) soon to go off air. Nothing has been official about it, but there have been talks about it. As they say, there is no smoke without fire. So, which shows will replace them? Will the new shows be able to garner the same ratings for the channel or prove to be otherwise?

My question for you all is –

What kind of shows you’d like to watch? What kind of quality would you prefer? Do you want any sequels? If, yes, which ones?

Till then, do enjoy watching your own favorite shows with their own twists and tadkas in it! 🙂

Some other reality television shows and how they performed last week:

I feel really good to see maximum numbers in BLUE!!! Ratings of your favorite shows have increased 🙂

  • Diya Baati Aur Hum has regained its ratings of 5.0 and still there are 100 percent chances of increasing it next week; as Mr. Amir Khan will be making a special appearance on the show in order to promote his own offereing ‘Satyamev Jayate’ starting 6th May, Sunday, 11 am.
  • While, Saathiya fans might be sad as the ratings have kept on declining for a while now. But nevertheless, I’m sure writers are working hard to gain back it’s number 1 position. Let’s wait and watch how soon that happens!
  • The new show Ek Dusre Se Karte Hain Pyar Hum which replaced Sasural Genda Phool has got an opening of 1.9; while Sasural Genda Phool ended with 2.2. Let’s see next week, how the show helps Star Plus in TRP charts!

Remarkable increase has been seen in Kyaa hua Tera Vaada -2.2 (1.7). Balaji is rocking with all 4 on-air shows of them! Last week Bade Acche Lagte Hain showed a hike of 0.4 and this week it’s Kya Hua Tera Vaada with a hike of 0.5. Time to celebrate! They’ve also done quite good promotions on Sony Max during IPL matches. The promos of Kya Hua Tera Vaada and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain were and are really rocking! But I guess it has declined IPL ratings! Is this the case? Do you feel airing promos of Sony TV’s serials and increase in their ratings is the reason for IPL ratings to decline? IPL saw considerable loss in GRPs of Max. It is 299 this week in comparison to 344 last week.

@undercoverpro smartly tweeted: “Nice Ratings management. Max loses 40 odd points and Sony gains about the same. It’s like Transfer Pricing.”

GRP wise Sony happily regained its number 2 position back and has given tough competition to Star Plus. There is just 15 points of difference between the two. This gap can be filled with such awesome content of the shows.

Well, that’s it for today. Sony TV fans Rejoice! All the best to all GEC’s as well as IPL. Let’s see what surprise next week brings. Till then, keep watching your favorite shows and keep supporting your favorite IPL teams.

Say, Jai TV serials ki!!!

Amitabh Bachchan’s tweet confirms Kaun Banega Crorepati (new season) to air by August

The television audience is fortunate to hear the following words again “Lock Kiya Jaye”  “Sure, Confident” “computerji”. Yes you guessed it right, Big B is back and this time all set to Host the 6th Season of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). There were reports that he might not host the sixth edition of the reality game show, but thanks to Twitter, Mr Bachchan tweeted “Off for a meet with Sony for next KBC…planning, operation, execution….will keep you informed on its (KBC’s) broadcast and other details”.

As you all know Mr Bachchan is super active on Twitter and always manages to keep his fans posted about news and his views on various topics. No matter what Mr Bachchan does it’s a news and this time he managed to relive the KBC Moments via Twitter. Following are some of his tweets related to this news.

“KBC: 22 million people tuned in to the opening episode .. Continued to be watched by over 120 million through the 56 episodes!! KBC: 16.5 crores prize money won, at an average of 12.5 lakhs per contestant on HOT SEAT… and.. 7.4 crore entries for GBJJ ..!!

“GBJJ: Ghar Baithe Jeeto Jackpot! Phone in on show, get right answer to a question, can win 1 – 2 – 3 lakhs at times!!”

These stats does show what a mass hysteria was created by this show. The show was first aired in 2000,  and was hosted by Big B. This was his first appearance on small screen. And soon the show became a huge hit as Big B hosted first and second seasons.  And guess what, following this, Shah Rukh Khan was soon seen in as the host for the third season. But thanks to the low TRP’s Big B soon returned to anchor the fourth season of the show. But this time it was was aired on Sony Entertainment Television. He did not stop there, and was also seen in the 5th Season.

Following is the illustrious list of the winners till the 5th season:

– Harshvardhan Nawathe – 1st winner of KBC in 2000

– Ravi Saini – Winner of  KBC Junior  1 Crore (Children under 14)

– Vijay and Arundhati Raul – Winner of KBC Jodi  1 Crore in 2001

Now that it is confirmed that Season 6 will be blessed with the presence of Mr Amitabh Bachchan, do you think that KBC might have some new twists? Will there be new dialogues and “computerji” might be replaced by iPad 😉 Sounds strange… right… Well you never know what’s in store for the 6th Season. Well you might want to know when Big B will start the show… So here you go 😉

Do send in your views about the show and your favourite moments related to the show.

Is “The Dirty Picture” too Dirty for Indian Television?

“For unavoidable reasons we regret to inform that the film ‘The Dirty Picture’ will not be telecast today. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted’.  This is the ticker that was being aired by SONY Television for the audience. Is Dirty Picture too dirty for Indian Television? Well let’s find out the exact story and the real issue for this mess.

The much-awaited television premiere of “The Dirty Picture” was scheduled to be aired at Sunday noon and 8 pm on SONY. But the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting asked for the telecast timing to be revised to a slot after 11 pm. Well The Dirty Picture, which is reportedly based on the life of southern actress Silk Smitha, had undergone 56 cuts before being issued a U/A certification by the censor board. And the irony is that this move by the government comes even as the channel had secured a clearance from the Bombay High Court on Saturday for the airing of the film. Strange, right?

This movie was advertised for close to a month prior to its telecast on television, but it seems that the movie is too dirty for the Indian Television Audience. Did you know that Sony had made 36 voluntary cuts and 26 compulsory cuts to make it suitable for broadcast on television and had obtained a U/A certification for broadcast? So do you really think that the India Television is not yet ready for such a bold movie? Well not long ago there was a lot of debate about “Sach Ka Saamna” and this was made into a political debate. And the channel had to shift the show to 11pm slot. So this might not be new to the audience, and one might have started to live with the fact that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has the final say in any matter.

You might find it ironical that “The Dirty Picture” has won 3 National awards, Yes 3 National Awards. Best Make Up Artist: Vijram Gaekwad, Best Costume Design: Niharika Khanand Best Actress: Vidya Balan. And one fine day you hear that this movie is not fit to be aired on National Television!! Amazing right!!! Well time will only say who will win this strange battle.

So what do you think about this unique decision and would you like this movie to be aired at Prime Time slot?

Happy Viewing 😉 (Not “The Dirty Picture“)

Have you tuned into Sony MIX yet?

There has been one more addition to the Music Channels that we watch and this time it’s Sony that has entered this market. Every year, India sees close to 2,000 films launched, and not to forget their music releases. It’s a fact that films have a large dependency on the success of their music. After all what’s Hindi Cinema without Music!

As of now following are some of the Music channels that are making the audience dance on its tunes:

– 9XM

9XM is a Bollywood Music Channel that airs the latest and best Bollywood Music songs along with rib-tickling jokes by a gang of super cool animated characters, namely Bade Chote, Bheegi Billi, Badshah Bhai, Silly Chicken and The Betel Nuts.

– B4U Music

B4U Music is a music-themed digital TV channel available on more than 8 different satellites, in more than 100 countries.

– MTV :

MTV is more an entertainment based channel now as the focus has shifted from music a lot. Do read out our earlier post about MTV over here –  MTV: Music or Masala Television

– Bindass

Bindass (also known as UTV Bindass) is a Hindi entertainment channel in India targeted at Indian youth.

– Zoom

Zoom is an Indian glamour and entertainment television channel primarily covering Bollywood

– Channel V

The bloody cool world of Channel [v] for the latest Bollywood gossip, the hottest TV shows and the coolest campus fashion.

– VH1

VH1 entertains you with your favourite tv shows, music videos, celebrity news, photos, live performances and special events.

– ETC

ETC is considered as the most credible Bollywood trade channel. It is a Music and movie channel in Hindi and Punjabi.

So getting back to the this new channel, Sony has positioned its new channel as a pure film music channel, MIX is a destination dedicated to music and all that belongs to it. Coming from a family that has prided itself on providing fresh breakthrough programming, MIX too promises an exciting and expansive library of Hindi film songs spanning all eras. Served through a theme based music play out suiting the need of the hour, these songs set up MIX as a channel where everyone will find their favourites every day. Moving into the gap created by erstwhile music channels claim themselves as ‘youth channels’ and other music channels dishing out non-music content and reality shows.

There are some reports that the music genre on TV has shrunk over time. Data tells us that it is due to lack of stickiness essentially because all music channels target youth. Everyone plays the same numbers too. Sony Mix has managed to tap listeners from both the age groups 14 -24 and 25 – 40 years. And the best part is that they don’t have video jockeys, no animated characters, but do have only one three-minute movie trailer in an hour. So do you think this new change will keep the audience tuned on Sony MIX?

So have you tuned into Sony Mix? Do let us know your views on the this latest Music Channel.

Happy Listening 😉

Satellite rights game…. Who is the real winner??

Imagine that you come to know that the most recent movie that you saw in a movie hall last week is about to be aired on television in a month” time… How do you feel about it??

Well, gone are those days when you had to wait for months and months before you get a chance to watch a new movie on television. It’s the latest trend on television these days. Honestly, in my opinion both the audience and the director are the real winners and not to forget the channel that airs these movies. The channels do mint loads of money as they get maximum viewers watching their channel and no doubt sponsors make it even bigger. They get chance to showcase their latest serials to the audience.

Let me give you an example, I might not watch ZTV and its daily soaps, but as you know that ZTV has bought the satellite rights of Don 2 for 37 crores. Yes you read it right… 37 crores. , so when they air Don 2, during the break, they will show the promos of their daily soaps, and this is when they get a chance to attract new viewers for their shows. Isn’t it interesting!!!! Not only this, the directors too get some return on the investment even before the movie is released. According to some experts, the TV satellite rights market has grown more than 10 times in the last decade alone. “Big flicks bring channels high TRPs and bumper ad revenue. This also gives a chance to the television audience to watch a movie in this living room with his entire family.”

So are you excited to watch the daily soaps 😉 just kidding. So are you excited to know which channel is in the game of buying movie satellite rights…. here you go

  • Sony Entertainment Television has inked a deal for four movie blockbusters including the super hit ‘The Dirty Picture’. (Amount not disclosed)
  • Zee acquires satellite rights of Don 2 for Rs. 37 crores
  • The satellite rights of `Agneepath` have been sold to Zee for Rs 41 crore
  • `Krrish 3` has been sold for Rs 37 crore to Star TV
  • Sony Entertainment supposedly paid 40 crore for Aamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor’s Movie “Taalash”

So are you going to watch Agneepath in a Movie Hall or in your living room!!!!  So let us know your views on this latest trend 😉

Happy Viewing.
