How to get through Roadies auditions – Have an emotional story ready!!

Emotion and Drama sells like hot cakes on Television. You might find this strange but that is the fact. There are number of events which have high voltage drama & the people involved don’t leave any space for over emoting. Sometime back, there was a strange incident on MTV Rodies season 8 that had forced us to think “Want to get through Roadies auditions? You just have to get an emotional story ready”. So what was that emotional story all about? And why are we even talking about last season’s episode? Without any Drama, let’s get down to the point.

MTV Roadies is a youth-based popular reality television show on MTV India.  The selected Roadies are provided with Hero Honda Karizma bikes to travel on a pre-decided route. Each episode features a vote-out at the end in which the Roadies eliminate one of their fellow Roadies by an anonymous vote, thereby decreasing the number of Roadies carrying on with the journey. There have been 8 seasons till date and the auditions 9th season are underway. Let me take you through the Audition Form that might give you an idea about the selection process:

Question 1 – What is your mantra for success – performance or politics?

Question 2 – One thing that you’re the best at.

Question 3 – Have you ever flirted on the internet?

Question 4 – Would you be a part of Slutwalk / Besharmi morcha? Why / What not?

Question 5 – What is the most adventurous thing you have done?

Question 6 – Is the Jan Lokpal bill a boon or a curse.

Question 7 – Do people audition for reality shows only to get famous?

And finally Question 8 – Tell us why you should NOT be selected.

Once you have submitted the form and if you are lucky / unlucky you will be invited to GD – Group Discussions. And then once you get short listed there, they might call you for an Interview (With the craziest panel –  Raghu – Rajiv duo and Ranvijay). And this is where the use of your emotional story might come in handy. As mentioned earlier in Season 8, Suraj aka Nagesh, the “fake” contestant, claimed that he came from a poor family and was working as a dishwasher in Hyderabad. His tale of hardships and struggle won over the judges viz. Raghu, Rajeev and Ranvijay and he ended up being selected as a contestant on the show and also won the viewers’ sympathy, being tagged as the most inspiring Roadie. But the real truth was that he had studied at IIBT (Indian Institute of Bartending) and was apparently quite successful in the domain of bartending as he even took charge at the Bartending Seminar & Workshop. As mentioned in his profile on the institutes’s website, he even worked in a call centre before joining the institute. Towards the end of the show, the Rodies crew managed to find out that his stories were fake and also called him back on the show and humiliated him in front of the whole crew & cast and also the television audience.

The question that arises after all this controversy is whether the contestant cheated the judges and the channel or was the whole incident scripted to gain more TRPs for the show? Also the people who run the show must try to find of the the real truth and be fair to the contestants as well.

So do you think sad stories will really give you an advantage and make the judges fall for it? No doubt the emotional stories have ruled the reality shows and ended up getting a lot of attention and publicity. Most of them today want to be a ‘crorepati’ that is rich and famous soon, and television provides them the medium for the same. A lot of youngsters may think that they are ‘smart’  and that they could get away by lying their way in front of such a smart panel and hence want to try such ways. Somehow people take advantage of this fact that the Indian Television Audience is totally Emotional about these things, and hence end up doing such acts. But does this mean all stories are fake? Well, not really, there are also some genuine emotional stories that have managed to pull in the audience. So would you like to create a story and get your entry pass in Roadies? Well that depends on which story you want to present – FAKE or GENUINE !!

Do let us know your views on this new trend of Emotional Stories to get into Roadies. Looking forward to your views on this controversial topic.

Top 10 shows on TV during 2011

We are just two days away from 2012. So in this special blog post iDubba brings you the 10 most popular shows/events of 2011. The ranking and popularity has been taken in consideration on the basis of activities done for these shows on iDubba in 2011.

  1. ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: There is definitely no surprise to see this event on top because 2011 as year is the biggest for India as we witnessed Indian team winning World Cup after 28 long years. Sports channels had the highest TRPS ever.
  2. MTV Roadies (Season 8): The longest running reality show with eight seasons in its kitty it is already in news for its ninth season starting next week. There has been a lot of speculation about the show being scripted but it still remains one of the most watched and favourite among the younger lot.
  3. Indian Premier League 2011: Another cricket event. So that makes the score 2 in total and that is definitely not astonishing in our country where second God is cricket despite being hockey as the national game.
  4. Splitsvilla (Season 4): Another reality show of MTV channel that targets youngsters. This reality show based on dating certainly knows how to turn heads. Bunch of hot girls and boys put together in a house to woo each other. What will you expect? 😉
  5. Koffee with Karan (Season 3): This chat show is my personal favourite and the only chat show that I can sit and watch without getting impatient. This one undoubtedly has a fresh and witty appeal to it. The show began to air in 2004 and has been a huge success since then.
  6. Bade Achhe Laggte Hain: Produced under Ekta Kapoor’s banner of Balaji Telefilms, who is undoubtedly the queen of Indian soap operas, “Bade Ache Lagte hai” which was launched in second half of the year, has Saakshi Tanwar and Ram Kapoor in the main lead. This show has millions of viewers across the country glued to the shows.
  7. Bigg Boss (Season 5): Another controversial reality show that is in news always for wrong reasons but manages to gain one of the highest TRPs. It is full of masala and entertainment.
  8. Man vs. Wild (Season 3): Finally a documentary cum travel based show in the list :). Discovery Channel’s Man vs. Wild is hugely popular especially because of its daring presenter Bear Grylls who is seen at ease at the worst places possible in the world.
  9. Taarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma: This sitcom is based  on the column ‘Duniya Ne Undha Chasma’ (which loosely translates into “Seeing the world through upside-down glasses”) written by Indian columnist and journalist Taarak Mehta for the Gujarati weekly magazine Chitralekha. In August2010, it beat one of the top shows to become the most watched TV show in India.
  10. Kaun Banega Crorepati (Season 5): This game show has been a massive success since it was first launched on Star Plus in 2000. However Sony TV bought its rights from third season onwards and the recent season 5 that had its first ever contestant winning the prize money of 5 crore rupees.

Keep watching your favourite shows! 🙂

MTV: Music or Masala Television

You might scratch your head and start thinking why am I referring MTV as Masala Television. Well the following post is about finding out the real truth. After reading this you may also come to a conclusion whether MTV is a Music Channel or it has turned out to be Masala Television over years.

It was not long ago say some 9-10 yrs back when viewers used to wait to see what’s new in the list..New Album, hot album, Best songs… in a way they wanted to see the latest Music Labels, their reviews and responses. Top most Singers had their music launch aired in MTV, there were shows explicitly telecasting interviews with the Singers and rappers. TV was geared more towards music and music appreciation, The concept of VJ’s was made popular by MTV as this channel was about MUSIC 24/7!!  The VJ’s of early 90’s had good knowledge of music, a unique style of their own and undoubtedly a great  sense of humor too.I am sure that none of you must have forgotten VJ’s like Malaika Arora, Maria Goretti , Shenaz Treasurywala, Mini Mathur and a few others. No doubt that Cyrus Broacha and Nikhil Chinnappa are still holding the fort but the charm that the previous VJ’s had, is not present there anymore. . MTV is now being hosted as a television show with VJs who have very little to do with knowledge in music and music videos.

You might have this question..Does MTV has series of reality shows!!! You might be surprised, but the answer is YES. The biggest ammunition that MTV has is “Roadies”. It was started way back in 2003, and currently 8 seasons are over. No doubt that Roadies is very popular and has many ardent followers, but the channel is trying to replicate this success in every other show. Every second show is now a Reality show. They are trying to get the youth hooked on to its channel by shows like MTV Stuntmania a biking stunt show hosted by famous stunts director Allan Amin and MTV Splitsvilla A dating reality show.

This channel which once used to be solely a music channel has turned in endless race of reality shows, In 1998, we had about 19 hours of music programming. 2008 saw an average of just three hours of music videos per day on MTV, with the rest of the day devoted to reality shows. . Is this a conscious effort made by MTV or has it lost its audience??? Is this the reason for MTV to drop “Music Television” from its corporate logo too in 2010?

If i ask you, which is the channel you prefer for watching Songs,  MTV will certainly not be your 1st choice. Some might say, 9XM , B4U Music, and the latest one Sony PIX. You might say that I have missed on one more important Music Channel, ie Channel V. Well, they too are slowly but steadily moving on the path of MTV. Only time will say if MTV was right moving its focus on Reality Shows and slowly taking Music off their menu. What are you views on this topic?

iDubba gives a review on MTV Roadies 9

Roadies Season 9 will air on MTV from January. Here is a short synopsis of the show for our viewers.

Raghu and Rajiv, these two brothers have changed the face of Roadies in India. With the USA as this season’s destination Roadies have come a long way. According to Raghu, Season 9 theme is ‘Everything or Nothing’ which America stands for. This show aims at youngsters as today’s young generation aged between 18-23 get an adrenal rush out of a high risk, high gain or high loss in life. The show’s format is such that participants are everything but they don’t have much freedom to plan and outrun show’s creative minds. Raghu and Rajiv can change the game and bring on twists whenever they want.

What do Roadies, Bigg Boss, Emotional Atyachaar, Spiltsvilla, Comedy Circus have in common?

Whenever I even think about reality shows in India I can only think about getting embarrassed if I have to watch them with my parents. Yes, that is the bitter reality of reality shows and that’s what I’m going to talk about today [I’ll still end up on a positive note about few “healthy” reality shows which are on-air].

The first show that comes to my mind (and eyes, ear, tongue) is obviously Bigg Boss Season 5 as this is currently the most controversial and over-hyped reality show famous for its not-so-famous celebrities (amazing isn’t). The show has recently received lot of flak from its viewers as the 10 days old season have only one male contestant this time with 13 female contestants. Very interestingly one of the female contestants, Sonika Kaliraman recently made a voluntary exit as she couldn’t take the chaotic atmosphere in the show with all the cat fights among other housemates. iDubba also posted a tweet about the same on 3rd October, just after a day Bigg Boss was launched and proved clearly that these shows are indeed scripted to get attention and apparently gain TRPs. The show has now got another male contestant actor Amar Upadhyay to give company to Shakti Kapoor, the solo male member in the house. Of course we can expect more male contestants coming in with its “wild card” entries. The show has always been in debate as they keep or remove any contestant to manage their TRPs.

Emotional Atyachaar is another show that has raised some eyebrows as they have shown adultery and disloyalty to an extent that I can’t remember even one episode where the so called “Suspect” came out clean. It is funny how my couple friends talk about their relationship and say to each other in a rather light manner-

Don’t you dare go anywhere without informing me otherwise I will have EMOTIONAL ATYACHAAR test conducted on you

Roadies (Roadies season-9 coming soon) and Splitsvillaon MTV were few of my favourites that I followed religiously. However these shows have depicted violence, ensuing abuses, inappropriate sexual content so much in the last few seasons that I can’t remember when I switched to MTV Channel last time to tune in to these shows.

Language is another problem that these reality shows have these days. I remember switching to Comedy Circus ka Naya Daurthat is aired on SONY channel currently when I was having a nice Sunday breakfast with my dad. The obscene language and remarks used by the contestants, which is supposedly aim to make others laugh, made me leave the room with a disgust feeling for the show. I missed the clean and wonderful jokes that the original “Laughter Challenge” had, that gave us some incredible stand up comedians like Sunil Pal, Ahsaan Qureshi, Raju Srivastava and Bhagwant Mann.

There was one positive impact that I could find was that there are few dating shows that have helped LGBT community by featuring gay couples and showcasing to Indian society that we need to come out of our mind shackles soon.

In midst of all these shows I could find one show, Axe ur Ex on Channel V that I can enjoy with a great laugh and without worrying about obscenity. This show has concept of irritating (to hell) the ex boyfriend/girlfriend with some great ideas that are harmless and fun to watch.

There are many popular shows that sell and cash on adultery, violence, sex and fraud. Most of the reality shows in India are poor imitation of their foreign counterparts from where the ideas are adopted and used blindly in India. These fail to gain TRPs normally and thus thrive on controversies and scripted plots. However if we look closer we can definitely have shows with less embarrassment for us to watch along with parents or kids.

Any one who wants to play Devil’s advocate here?
