Should you really care about 2% of TV viewing audience?

Let’s start with the tweet which triggered this post:

Sneha Rajani ‏ @SnehaRajani

Do people on Twitter realise that they represent less than 2% of the TV viewing audience in our country?

When it comes from Senior Executive Vice President and Business Head of popular TV channel, it got to have some weight. Well you might not care about “this” 2% of TV viewing audience (which turns out to be a whopping 8 million) as this does not affect your TRPs “yet”. But just to bring out this question today- Don’t you think this is anyway a subset of existing TV viewing audience? Also it is probably the only audience with a face and platform to reach out to you?

So what’s the real story behind all of this?

The show “Bade Acche Laggte Hain” till now (it’s been a year) offered an outstanding storyline and audience loved how this couple who got married and fell in love with each other and their consummation sequence. Not only that, there were such awesome episodes and most cherishing scenes of Ram and Sakshi, which one can keep on watching a million times. Even their phone-cut scenes were shot so beautifully, one could easily feel their happiness as well as sadness. The show had such interesting charm and was in top 10 shows for first few months. Bade Acche Laggte Hain is definitely ‘the-most-talked about’ show on social media (a rare feat in India). Everyone must not be watching it, but they all know about it. The freshness of the show was something that kept audiences glued to the show.

But, unfortunately, these days, fans feel, that the show has lost its charm and its original storyline. Not only the fans, but even the Director of the show felt the same; when she tweeted to a fan

sangieta rao ‏ @sangieta3

@heartrider_anu. I can only say u all were thr wid us in our good time… Hope u stay wid us now, as this phase shall too pass..

This is because the current track is sort of a separation of the lead couple. The loyal fans do not want to see the separation track and instead want to watch how the couple faces challenges of their life ‘together’. They surely do not wish to watch the same K-soapy stuff which is like ‘been there, done that’ sort of a thing for them!

rajalaxmi sahu ‏ @rajsah1982

@PositiveMe2 @sangieta3 Why d shows are being made? for fans and viewers?then it shd go in way we expect it.cut the crap pls, dnt ruin BALH

 Tullika ‏ @tullikarastogi

@PositiveMe2 people are suffering from heart attacks sadness syndrome please bring Ram and Priya together and bring love strong moments

 Priyanka Kannan ‏ @Kannan_Priyanka

@ramkapoor1973 @PositiveMe2 @sangieta3 The way the story is progresing – both the viewer interest n TRP wil DIP! 0-out of box thinking..SAD!

Also there is news about a leap happening in Bade Acche Laggte Hain. Just one article somewhere and FANS go BOOOM! The outrage has no END! They just do NOT wish to watch the leap. Few fans have gone to the extent of saying “we will stop watching the show if there is a leap”. This is insane! But that shows how strongly and emotionally fans are attached to the show and they do not like it being ruined in such a worse way. There is a petition which fans have created and have been broadcasting it to other fans, asking them to sign it if they don’t wish to see a leap in the a show:

@kogupta#noleapinBALH, show is too unique to be thrown into leap fest already. We want a happy pregnancy track with cute RaYa moments!!

Bade Ache Lagte Hain ‏ @BadeAchche_RKR

With rumors of 4 year leap coming up in the show, we have created a petition to let the creatives know that the…

So you have a got a fair bit of idea now, this in all probability looks like the first case where fans have taken the show-makers of a channel by storm (In India). Show makers are forced to reply to fans and since they cannot take the decision of changing their story-line based on few “thousand” tweets, they have gone defensive. Importantly, the show’s TRPs are not low and hovering around 2.4-2.6, which might be holding the makers to listen to this “2%” of TV audience.

Since people on Twitter might also get influenced by peers, we thought of taking neutral views of our audience at iDubba regarding the same issue. (In just one day we were able to register more than 150 reactions) Here are the results-

Q1. Do you feel Bade Achhe Laggte Hain has lost its content quality?
58% (50)
No- 30% (26)
Maybe- 12% (10)

Q2. Do you think there should be a LEAP in the show?
Yes- 53% (46)
No- 42% (36)
I don’t know- 5% (4)

Surprisingly the results here indicate people would like to see a leap as it might give them some new content.

Here are some of the reactions from our users:

“It should continue like the way it had started, all lovey lovey.. no vamps/villaneous roles… should end off in another 20 episodes.. then maybe season 2 could start :)”

“They shud put some sensible plots in the shows n make RAM(the lead character) some head to think n see the truth….how can the lead character be so dumb….”

“Coolest show ever watched on tv u could add some funny stuff to have a good laugh with family. missing the sense of humor of the story writer “

“Show has totally gone boring. If nothing changes for good in next few episodes, I ll quit watching it. Make it something exciting. Like death of any characters or intro of new chars.”

So as we can see the reactions about the show are mixed but one thing is clear- viewers believe the show has lost its original charm and quality and they want it to be back on track (which even show’s Director agreed to). Put aside TRPs, with platforms like Twitter and iDubba, TV viewers get a chance to make their voices heard. Whether some actions are taken or not is a completely different thing as it requires the involvement of various other stakeholders for same. But we believe that very soon show makers will consider including “qualitative” data too instead of just “quantitative” data while deciding the path of a show. In U.S. for example Nielson found out that TRPs of shows are in accordance with various social TV conversation analyzers like Trendrr TV. Which means you can NO longer leave people’s voices unheard. With internet users growing by leaps and bounds (in India) th3 trend is only going to get strong – from 2% to 20%, could you afford to neglect these viewers then??

Can “Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke” impress the audience?

The moment we talk about cousins we all go back in time and recollect loads of childhood memories. Zee TV too is all set to bring back this unique feeling of spending time with cousins with their new show – Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke. You might very well remember how fearless, confused, love struck, hopeful, elated, curious, nervous we felt at that age? Even after years we can never forget those days when we thought that every thing was possible and we could get away with almost everything. Zee Tv has just done the same with Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, a new show that promises to take you on that journey. You might have seen the promos which look quiet fresh and full of so called masti that we used to have when cousins were around. iDubba is on a journey to find out more about the show and what to expect from this new show.

The show is produced by Shakuntalam Films, who earlier came up with ace shows as Na Aana Is Desh Laado and Sapno Se Bhare Naina.

The story is based on the life of two cousins named Rachna and Gunjan. As expected one is a simple and introvert girl (Rachna), while the other is a playful and fun-loving girl (Gunjan). Soon there is a twist in the plot and due to some issues, Gunjan is a smart 16- year- old girl who lives in Mumbai and shares a wonderful relationship with her mother Sneha. As fate would have it, Gunjan’s life falls apart when her mother passes away and her father sends her to her maasi’s (mother’s sister) place in Varanasi so that she’s well taken care of. Gunjan moves to Varanasi to stay with her maasi, Shail (enacted by Vaishnavi Mcdonald) and here, begins the story of Gunjan and Rachna. Interesting? Predictable?

Lets try to find out more about the 2 lead characters. Rupal Tyagi is playing the bubbly role of Gunjan. She was seen in serials like Chhoti Si Zindagi and Hamari Betiyoon Ka Vivaah. Where as Mahima Makwana is playing the role of the introvert Rachna and was seen in Sawaare Sabke SapnePreeto serial earlier. Well the show has already started airing on Zee TV from 21 May 2012 and as expected has replaced the show Choti Bahu 2. Based on the first few episodes and the promos there is surely an attempt to make the show look youthful and appealing. With such a story line its a must to show the contrast between the two girls, both by their looks & nature. As one is a  typical big city girl who is in tune with the latest trends in clothes, while the other comes from a conservative family in Varanasi with a strict father. So can Zee impress the audience with this new attempt?

Do let us know your views and feedback about this new show. Also do set in a reminder regarding this show on our iDubba App, so that you don’t miss the show.

Happy Viewing.

Satyamev Jayate 2nd episode reviews, reactions and Video (Child sexual abuse)

Sunday’s will never be the same again! Yes we are talking about Satyamev Jayate. It was time for the second Episode and yet another Shock. The audiences were eagerly waiting to know about the second topic and as mention in our previous post “What to expect from upcoming second episode of Satyamev Jayate?”  This episode was indeed about “Child Sexual Abuse”.

The show started with Aamir Khan talking about Parents. He mentioned that our parents are always worried about their kids; they always ensure that we are safe. There was a moment when Aamir’s parents said “You will understand this when you become a parent” How often do we hear this!! I guess most of our parents might have said the same thing to us at some point in time. In the show they had invited Parents who had kids between 12-13 yrs. And soon there was a disclaimer made by Aamir Khan and stated that if parents feel that this show should not be watched by their kids, they must ensure that they are in a safe place. But soon he mentioned that they will hold a workshop for children towards the end of the episode.

As expected the show did move on to the Statistics about Child Sex Abuse.  Based on Indian Child Sexual Abuse report: 2007, 53% Indian children are victims of some form of Child sex abuse.  And soon the 1st story was based on the same topic, as Cindrella shared her shocking story. The reactions of the audience were just too scary. The audience could not believe what they were hearing this. But Cindrella   did show her fighting spirit but she was still so brave while describing the incident in front of whole world. It takes lot of courage to do that. Soon there were more shocking stats that were yet to come. Listen to this “53% of boys are sexually abused which is more than girls” Yes that is actually SHOCKING.Soon the second guest did share his side of the story. Harish suffered 11 years of Child sex abuse in silence. He was talking about the ugly side and also did mention that all he had to do was say NO. But at times it’s too hard to say your first NO.  Harish’s mother also made an appeal to parents to believe their children if they ever talk about Child sex abuse.

The stories did not end there; there were numerous incidents that were shared. Every story was more ugly than before, but the courage that was displayed by the guests made you feel that it takes a lot of guts to stand and share it with the world.  Dr Rajat Mitra did try to explain the mental state of the perpetrators and also made a very valid point that one should respect the behaviours of a person and not the age.   But as they say “When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile”  There was also a small ray of hope for the children who are suffering this abuse.1098. Yes this is not a normal number. It’s a Helpline number for kids and as of now they have centres in 200 cities in India. It is a helpline that gets 25 lakh calls every year. So do keep this number in mind and spread the awareness.

As promised at the start of the show Aamir did invite the kids on the show and spoke to them. It was a great joy to watch the kids on the show and talk about their version of the word Safety. The workshop did tell them to ensure that they must try to save themselves and scream when such incidents occur. And when it comes to the 3 body parts they must share it with their parents.  And parents should conduct the workshop with their children every 6 months.

As expected the reactions on Social Media were also all over. Following are some of the tweets that were shared about this issue.

– What is the one thing that you as a parent can do to keep your child safe from Child sex abuse?

– Is it easy to forgive a Child sex abuse perpetrator?

– What is the one thing that you as a parent can do to keep your child safe from Child sex abuse?

Did we forget something…? Well yes, Sridevi was also on the show. As she was shared a testimony of Harish’s story and she was kind enough to come down to meet Harish personally. The show did end on a positive note and there was also a commitment made that Aamir Khan will send across a letter to the government and request them to pass the Law that is pending in Rajya Sabha.

So are you of the opinion that we should all support this cause? More importantly do you feel connected with the show? Do let us know.

“Dil par lagegi to baat banegi” Satyamev Jayate 1st episode reviews and reactions

Sunday’s will never be the same again! Yes we are talking about Sunday and Television. As you are aware “Satyamev Jayate “marks the television debut of popular Indian Bollywood actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan. The promos were all over the print, media, television and Social Media. And finally that day had arrived when the Television Audience did manage to watch Aamir Khan’s show “Satyamev Jayate”. The 1st show was aired today, 6th May Sunday from 11:00am to 12:30pm. iDubba is on a journey to find out and understand from the viewers what did they feel about this show. Has this show hit the audience in their hearts!!! And will this show change the way we think about our very own “SOCIETY”??

Aamir Khan’s show Satyamev Jayate’s first episode was based on female foeticide, a inhuman act which is practiced in many parts of the country even as we speak. The show had some Shocking revelations about female foeticide and that it is a bigger problem in urban educated sections of society. The show had 3 stories that were shocking but did hit the hearts, and that was evident by the reactions of the audience in the studios. The tears were just flowing down when they heard the facts and the harsh reality about the victims. I’m sure that you too might have a similar reactions while watching it on your television sets. As the promos suggested, that “Jo Dil Pe Lage..To Hi Bat Banegi” which seems to be working.

We are not here to talk about the TRP’s or the GRP’s about this show. This post is to understand what our viewers think about this show, hence following are some of the tweets that were shared about the 1st episode. Also #Satyamevjayate was top trending topic on Twitter.

The show did present some shocking facts about the Current Sex Ratio in India, about the sting operation that was conducted in Rajasthan by two journalists and the kind of society that is encouraging such acts of human trafficking. There have been a number of News Channels that have been showing similar cases to the television audience. So what is different that this show will do! One great thing about this show is that it will be aired on Doordarshan, and the kind of reach this channel has, no channel can beat it. This show not only talks about the problems, but also talks about the solutions and the ways in which one can stop such cases that have been a kind of trend in our society. The Show is not just a Chat Show where people come and share their problems, but is also a platform that will encourage the youth to open their hearts and minds about such Sensitive topics. Some audiences might find this show a bit to real and violent with the kind of content and social issues that have been discussed. Well, it’s a mirror that we often Dont like to look at, a mirror that cannot be seen “Eye to Eye”.

The show was a mix of video’s and experts sharing their experiences, the kind of research that the team has done for this show, a story about how Julamajara one town in Nawanshahr district recorded birth of 1000 girls for 1000 boys in 2011 and about Mr.Kishan kumar in 2001 who helped Nawanshahr a district of Punjab state to raise its gender ratio by 71 points.  As you are aware there will be16 songs for the 16 episodes and the first episode did end with “O Ri Chiraiya” a heart wrenching and haunting melody by Ram Sampath and Swanand Kirkire.

Do let us know your views about this Show and also do follow us on Twitter (iDubba) for more updates about this show as and when it occurs.
