And the winners are… IIFA 2012

IIFA Awards, so called International version of Bollywood awards was back. Are you all set to read more about what exactly happened at the award ceremony? Well iDubba has the details for you. So just sit back and enjoy the post.

Hosts Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar tried to keep the audience in splits with their wit and humour. Unlike the other awards show, they tried not to make much fun of their fellow actors. Well as they say that SRK only has the rights to do that! Well moving on, the show saw star-studded performances by Sonakshi Sinha, Bipasha Basu, Prabhu Deva, Priyanka Chopra, Shahid, Rishi and Ranbir Kapoor. You might ask where are the other start? Well this year`s IIFA awards was different, and the actors who were missed by all included Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, John Abraham, Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, and Sonam Kapoor.

As expected, Zoya Akhtar`s ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ and Imtiaz Ali`s ‘Rockstar’ triumphed at the 13th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards, with each winning four trophies. The film industry also paid heart-warming tributes to long timers Ramesh Sippy and Rekha and bestowed them each with the Outstanding Achievement awards. As mentioned earlier that the big stars were missing, it was time for the young guns to take up the responsibility and keep the show alive.

So when will we be able to see the award show on television? Well don’t worry we will also share the details and the dates with you. But till then let’s check out the winners of this prestigious award. Check out the complete list of winners.

Bollywoord Stars and Television – iDubba tries to find out the real winners

It’s a unique relationship, sometimes Sweet and then sour 😉 Don’t worry we are not talking about any link-up between actors. This relationship is about Bollywood Stars and Television. You might agree that Bollywood stars have given a helping hand to the TV industry in widening its horizons. But at the end of the day Television has been a major platform that the Bollywood Stars are using, some are successful while some have failed at the Box… oops… TV Office 😉 Television was considered as an second innings for the actors and was considered to be the home for retired actors only. But times have changed. Many of the super hit, upcoming actors and actresses have joined that bandwagon and have taken up television shows.

iDubba is on a journey to find out the stars that have been successful / not so successful on television :

– Television will be incomplete if we don’t talk about Amitabh Bachchan 🙂 He made his debut on television in 2000 with Kaun Banega Crorepati. Since then, every show he has graced has turned out to be a super hit. Those shows include Kaun Banega Crorepati, Kaun Banega Crorepati Dvitiya, Bigg Boss Season 3, KBC season 4 and 5

– Talking about KBC, who can forget Shah Rukh Khan 🙂 But he had made his TV Debut way long back in 1988 with “Fauji“. He went on to appear in other television serial, such as Aziz Mirza’s Circus in 1989, which depicted the life of circus performers. And then there was no looking back, the television star was a movie star. But his real calling in television came when Amitabh Bachchan stepped down from KBC in 2007 and SRK took over. The initial TRPs of SRK’s KBC were promising but interest slowly started dipping. Then came the show Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain? Well again, initial TRPs of the show were promising but the show and it never managed to go past its first season. King Khan did manage to return to hosting a reality TV with Zor Ka Jhatka but did not impress much

– Done with one Khan… Now lets get back to Mr Dabangg 🙂 Salman Khan did make his TV debut in 2008 with Dus Ka Dum. As they say if Salman is hosting a reality TV show, it’s bound to garner high TRPs. And this was true for both the shows – Dus Ka Dum and Bigg Boss Season 4

– Now its time to focus our attention on the Dancing King of Bollywood 🙂 Yes you guessed it right – Hrithik Roshan. He made his TV debut with Just Dance in 2011. Soon after this was announced, there were reports in the media about Hrithik signing on for a sum of Rs 2 crore per episode. Since then, the show’s opened to moderate success.

– Time for some action 🙂 Yes we have Mr Khiladi next in line. Yes Akshay Kumar did make his TV Debut 2008 with Khatron Ke Khiladi. He went on to host the 2nd season of Khatron Ke Khiladi too. Reportedly, the TRPs of both seasons were fantastic. However he was absent in the 3rd season as Priyanka Chopra was the new host. But soon the TRP’s were not in favor of Miss Chopra and hence Akshay had to return in the 4th Season of Khatron Ke Khiladi. Well he did not stop there and was soon present in every household ie Kitchen 🙂 Yes he hosted the first Masterchef of India, a show based on cooking. His Master Chef India show did receive moderate success

– And finally this post cannot be complete without talking about Mr Perfectionist 🙂 Mr Aamir Khan. He is all set to make his Television Debut with the show “Satyamev JayateThe Truth Alone Prevails“. The talk show will tell stories of real people across India” You can read more about his show over here  – Will “Satyamev Jayate” bring about change in the Indian Television scenario?

If you note carefully, there would be around 10 or 12 well-known actors doing shows on TV in one year. And most Bollywood actors come as either anchors or judges. So there is a good presence of our Bollywood stars on Television. Do let us know which is your favorite star that you would like to see on Television. and also it would be interesting to know if you think that this is a healthy trend.

Happy Viewing 🙂

Will Dhoom 3 make a Dhoom at Box Office?

Dhoom series is back.… And this time it’s time for Dhoom 3 🙂  It is produced by Yash Raj Films’ Aditya Chopra (son of Yash Chopra) and was released in 2004. Earning over Rs. 42 crore ($9 million USD), and the film became one of the top-grossing Indian films of 2004 and Dhoom 2 grossed over 150 crore (US$29.93 million). This movie has brought in a new genre of movies akin to the fast paced motorcycle-robbery dramas and its sequel, Dhoom 2, was released in 2006. The movie had a significant cultural impact among urban Indian youth. It was blamed for an increase in incidents of street racing; bike-borne theft and stunting on public roads.

So will Dhoom 3 make Dhoom at the Box office? What is so special about Dhoom 3 and why is there such a hype about it? Well, guess what? Mr Perfectionist is about to enter the Dhoom Series. Yes the film will feature Aamir Khan playing a negative character while both Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will continue in their now iconic roles of Jai Dixit and Ali . So what about the leading ladies? Reports are that Katrina Kaif wil be a part of the film.

Following are some of the facts that might interest you:

– Dhoom 2 was filmed in Mumbai (India), Namibia, Durban (South Africa), and Rio de Janeiro, (Brazil), making it the first Bollywood film to be filmed in Brazil!

– After the release of Dhoom Series, Robbery increased in cities where people after taking their money from ATMs or from banks were robbed at gunpoint and the robbers escaping on bikes

– Reportedly, the producer of the film, Aditya Chopra wanted to make the film in 3d format, but actor Aamir Khan is not convinced as he thinks ‘making a 3D film needs more expertise. Let’s wait and watch who will win 😉

– Our very own Copy Cat, oops Mr Original Pritam, will return once again to compose the music of the third installment

– Dhoom 2 was nominated for several awards that year, but only picked up a few of the major ones. At the Filmfare Awards, Hrithik Roshan won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, out of five total nominations for the film

– Dhoom 3 starts shooting in May 2012

So are you excited to see Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3? Do you think it will be a blockbuster and beat its previous 2 versions? Do let us know your views about Dhoom 3. Also looking forward to know which was your favourite movie.. Dhoom or Dhoom 2?

Happy Dhooming… Happy Viewing 🙂

Show me the Money – Are Stars asking too much of moolah?

“Show me the Money” – You might have heard this phrase in the film ‘Jerry Maguire’ starring Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr. So why are we talking about it now? Well off lately Bollywood too is gearing up to use this phrase at will.

There was a time when actors were being paid in thousands, then lakhs and then came crores. Well the Crore figure was not so common and a very few were part of this elite club. But thanks to satellite television and its reach to millions of viewers things are changing. Also the Marketing and Advertising industry has managed to rope in the Bollywood stars to sell their products and soon there was a race to say “Show me the Money”. But do you think that the race to earn the highest Moolah is a going out of hands? Well let’s take a tour of some of the most bizarre and crazy facts that might help you to decide for yourself.

Actress Katrina Kaif is truly the empress when it comes to the fashion world. Having an international modeling background, Kats definitely reigns the ramp shows in India. And she is also one of the most sought after actresses in Bollywood. There are reports that she has been offered Rs 1 crore for making a 10-minute appearance in Kochi. She will be on the ramp for just 10 minutes. Just 10 minutes! Well we are not kidding. It’s a fact, she would take home 1 crore in 10 mins. Do ponder and think about it if this trend is going too far.

Next in the list we have Mr Sanjay Dutt. His earlier ventures used to fetch him somewhere around 5 crores a movie. But after his performance as ‘Kancha Cheena’ in the blockbuster, however, Sanjay Dutt has doubled his price. And now he is all set to ensure that he says “Show me the Money”. At least for 10 crores a film, we hope for many ‘Kancha Cheena’ like performances from the actor!

Not far enough is the other star from the movie Agneepath, Mr Hrithik Roshan. Star Plus’s show Just Dance paid the star approximately Rs 2 crore per episode. The show had around 56 episodes, including screening of entries, auditions, and the actual competition. And this did fetch Roshan approximately Rs 112 crore. Yes 112 crore 😉 Don’t worry we have not forgotten the Bodyguard of the Film Industry. According to reports, Salman had charged Rs 89 crore for the 104 episodes telecast in the first season of 10 Ka Dum. For the second season he asked for an increment of Rs 44 crore which failed to materialize.

SHOW ME THE MONEY 🙂 Who would have thought of such figures being quoted and even being paid? But it’s a fact that there are channels and Movie makers who have actually gone ahead and fulfilled these crazy demands. But do you think its a healthy trend? As they say that there is always a market correction and then such figures will really feel crazy and might be difficult to pay. Time will only tell what will the channels and movie makers do if that happens. But as of now…. The stars are the people who are demanding and saying “Show me the Money”

Do let us know your views on this interesting topic.

Happy Viewing.

Are you missing Double Roles in Hindi Cinema?

When was the last time you saw a movie with double role? Finding it difficult to recollect right?? Well, double role used to be the most popular formula of filmmakers. The trend of double role movies is as old as 1960 and today almost every top actor has acted in at least one movie where they played double role.

The trend is so popular if we look at stats we will be amazed to learn that from 1960 till 2009, that is 50 yrs., there has not been a single year without at least one movie in this category. But somehow I feel that in the past decade, the double role formula fizzled out and not many filmmakers exploited twin characterized scripts. As compared with 1998 when there were 11 movies in this category in single year.

As kids we used to loves such movies, the curiosity of these double characters use to leave us amazed and we always ended asking our elders “How can there be two characters who look the same acting together” Audiences were always happy to see two heroes (in the form of two different characters) at the price of one ticket. It was a treat to the fans and a total paisa vasool to watch their favorite actors in twin role…….

There have been loads of such examples that have dazzled on the silver screen. Let’s go down the memory and relive such amazing movies that have ensured you get your money’s worth…. Double the amount 😉

–       Dilip Kumar in Ram Aur Shyam, Daastan, Bairaag,

–       Raj Kumar in Karamyogi

–       Sanjeev Kumar in Naya Din Nayi Raat

–       Amitabh Bachchan in  The Great Gambler, Don

–       Dev Anand in  Hum Dono

–       Kamal Haasan in Chachi 420, Appu Rajja and Hindustani

–       Dharmendra  in Yakeen

–       Sharmila tagore in Mausam and An Evening in Paris

–       Sridevi in Chaalbaaz

–       Hema Malini in Seeta Aur Geeta

–       Govinda in Aankhen

–       Anil Kapoor in Kishen Kanhaiya

–       Akshay Kumar in Aflatoon

–       Salman Khan in Judwa,

–       Sunil Shetty in Gopi Kishan

–       Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai

–       Priyanka Chopra in Love Story 2050

–       Shahid Kapoor in Kaminey

–       Shahrukh in Duplicate , Don and Om Shanti Om

Well, the list of Double Role movies is endless… with more than 226 Double/triple role movies being released since 1951 we wish to see more of these kinds hitting the theatre. Hope that the filmmakers treat their audience with more of such movies. Though not all Double role movies were successful, but it does attract a good crowd. So let’s wait and watch how this age old formula of Bollywood works in the present times.

Television Commercials – It’s War time!!

The concept of comparative advertising emerged in the nineties. The nineties era witnessed the PepsiCoke war which was followed by ComplanHorlicks tug of war and the latest in the basket is the RinTide war. Not Long ago the television audience witnessed the Advertisement War between the two giant companies – Proctor & Gamble (P&G) and Hindustan Unilever (HUL) where both were trying to promote their products – Tide and Rin respectively. There was a lot of hue and cry by both the companies and the matter was taken to court. However this Comparative advertising, in recent years, has become a multibillion dollar business and has challenged courts with new, complex legal issues related to the rights of consumers, advertisers and their competitors.

It’s evident that these companies are pushing their advertising and marketing team to innovative strategies to promote their products. But do you think the comparative advertisement is fair where you directly bully your competitor on television?

Well many experts might end up saying “Everything is fair in Love and War”. This is truly a war on television. It’s been long now those television audiences have not seen much of a war between the companies. Don’t worry as there have been two new ads that have brought back the so called fun aspect for the television audience.

The latest war has started between “The Times of India and The Hindu“.

In the ad the interviewer asks a few questions to some college students / professionals. Following are some of the questions that were asked “Who will succeed Ratan Tata as head of the TATA group?”, “What did Dhyan Chand play?”, “Who is the author of the Harry Potter series?”, “Paul McCartney was a part of which band?”, “What does ATM stand for?”. To one’s surprise none of them knew the right answer. Strange right!!. Wait tell you hear the next question – What is actor Hrithik Roshan’s nickname and which actress is associated with the size zero. Guess what…The respondents had no trouble answering these. Soon the Final question was presented “Which newspaper do you read” and almost all the respondents said “The Time of India”. Although there was a Beep effect while they were answering this important question, but it was clear. They said TOI.

The second ad involves two major giants in the motorcycle industry – Bajaj and Hero Moto Corp. The advertisement in controversy goes on like this, three men owning different bikes say they always desired Discover 125, but settled for something lesser to satisfy father or wife, or to avoid annoying boss. They sound apologetic about their bikes. When they name them, a bleep sinks their voice, but it leaves enough for viewers to guess they are referring to Hero’s Splendor or Passion. “Discover nahin hai, par chalta hai,” each of them says.

So it seems that the war of visual ads is back and surely the television audience will have a great time watching these creative ads. Some of you might think that this is just publicity and one must not end up promoting products in this manner. Well, the competition is tough out there and everyone is trying to gain attention of the consumer. At times in this process the war gets a bit rough and then they cross the limit. Hope that this war and future wars don’t end up taking the consumer for granted. As they say…at the end Consumer / Audience is the real King

Looking forward to your comments on this interesting topic and also whether you would like to see more ads of this kind on Indian Television.
