Satyamev Jayate’s TRPs falling flat; Aamir Khan not bothered!

While Amir Khan discusses global topics with the audience …we will like to discuss him and his show Satyamev Jayate with our audience. Satyamev Jayate means Truth always triumphs but sadly TRPS are not telling the same story.

While Star reports a historic reach of 37.4 crore people over the first 4 episodes aired in India. This when extrapolated to All India Universe, as per industry conversions, means that the show has reached out to 37.4 crore Indians since its launch – that is 1 in every 3 Indians have watched Satyamev Jayate.

But then why is the show stepping down the ladder of Television Rating Points (TRP)? Airing on nine channels (Star Plus, Star Pravah, Star Jalsha, Star World, Star Utsav, Star Vijay, Asianet, ETV Telegu and Doordarshan) the shows depreciates. The Channel and Advertisers are disappointed with the gradual degradation as they expected Aamir’s TV debut to give a tough fight to Amitabh Bachchan’s Kaun Banega Crorepati and mint a whole lot of money.

Aamir though is not taken aback with such responses. In an interview with a leading daily, Aamir said:

“I am very clear that our viewer ship is the highest ever. I don’t know what the advertisers do but I will tell you one thing. The reason I am not bothered about TRPs is because TRP number is given by just 7,000 boxes. And how 7000 boxes going to tell me what India is watching. TRP is very different from viewership. And I am bothered about viewer ship; I am concerned about it, not the TRPs.”

Mr. Perfectionist said that he is happy with people’s reactions and the show’s response is like dream come true. He said:

The show aims at awakening commoners and to change their thoughts. In fact, in a large number of issues… what is required is a change in attitude. For example, all of us are surrounded by this patriarchal kind of thinking. Now politicians can hardly change that. The feeling that people have… of not wanting a girl child… that is a feeling. So we are looking to provoke people to look inward, rather than outward.”

He wanted people to discuss debate and have an insight of what is happening around them; and shall we say the Show’s host is having his say as the show itself is one of the very few individual events (media or otherwise) to trend on Twitter every weekend with such high levels of conversation both in India and globally. The show has reached over 50 crore impressions in the online space. Satyamev Jayate crossed a million fans on Facebook, making it the fastest online fan community build up for a show on Indian Television.

Yes, it is different from an average reality show but not in terms of Drama. There has been a controversy that voices the positives and the negatives of the show. On one hand the doctors opposed the question that was raised towards their profession during the medical malpractice episode. On the other hand the Facebook fans are dishing out support messages for the show and their hero Aamir Khan. In fact the promotional activities keeps the drama quotient high as all through the week an Advert by Aamir himself hints about the next episode but does not disclose it till Sunday maintaining the suspense and excitement. Don’t forget the ice breaking music session at the end of every episode. So, the show lacks no Drama what so ever and it gives your goose bumps a trigger because it shows reality out and out but somehow the TRPs aren’t doing the same for the advertisers.

So, what should the Channel tell Sataymev Jayate’s team to bring in for TRPs?

What to expect from upcoming second episode of Satyamev Jayate?

Satyamev Jayate – Truth Alone Prevails” premiered on Star Plus last Sunday at the time slot of 11 AM. As Aamir Khan – ‘The Star’, thought it will be cool to have the show telecasted in the same slot as the epic Mahabharta or Ramayana. Well the show debuted and created strong ripple among the masses who watched the show in full anticipation as Aamir had created this whole mystery around the show with promos being aired on every Star Network’s channel and online. I am sure Amir Khan must be thanking his stars as he received massively encouraging feedback from all the sections of the society, media, celebrities and others on social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, blogging websites etc.

Here is a short synopsis of first episode of Satyamev Jayate

The first episode was based on female foeticide, a inhuman act which is practiced in many parts of the country even as we speak. The show had some shocking revelations about female foeticide and that it is a bigger problem in urban educated sections of society. The show had 3 stories that were shocking but did hit the hearts, and that was evident by the reactions of the audience in the studios. You can read the rest here on one of our previous blogs: “Dil par lagegi to baat banegi” Satyamev Jayate 1st episode reviews and reactions

So what our audience can we expect from the next episode of Satyamev Jayate?

As the first episode spoke and discussed about one of the major evil social issues that our country and society is facing, so it is obvious to assume that the upcoming episode will have some or the other social issues as well. The first show and issue was really intriguing and kept the audience hooked with their tears in eyes. So as expected ‘The Perfectionist’ – Amir has already set the bar and the audience will look forward to more from the coming episodes. Well the show had everything you need to make it a success in today’s television scenario where every show (drama or reality) is fighting for TRPs. It has the reality of our life, strong emotional quotient, some really hard hitting facts (which left everyone bewildered) and obviously a pretty star face – Aamir Khan. Undoubtedly Aamir Khan did justice to a strong host and kept the show alive without any dull moments.

The next episodes might portray other really negative issues that our government has not been able to do anything about: “Child Sexual Abuse” or may be “The plight of women’s safety in India with alarmingly raising number of rape and molestation cases”. There is something else that might take the show maker’s attention; “Child Labor and its deadly impact on the upliftment of our country” or “The stark reality behind Indian farmers attempting suicide”.

Here is a tweet from one of iDubba fans that might confirm the next episode’s theme –

Whatever may be the next social issue to be addressed or as the social media is upbeat about Amir keeping the secret and excitement for next episode intact; one thing is sure that nobody can be certain of the effective action coming out via this show. It might force us to see the real state of our country and its people but the important thing is that it should be able to bring a change.

As Amir Khan says in one of the promos of the show: “Sirf hungama khada karna mera maksad nahi, meri koshish hai ki ye soorat badalni chahiye; meri seene me nahi to tere seene me sahi, ho kahi bhi aag lekin aag jalni chahiye“. So will we be able bring a change whether in female foeticide or any other issue that will be addressed in upcoming episodes?

Do you think that “Satyamev Jayate” can bring the change; the revolution?

Why TV Channels need to engage with their audience in a better way?

Very recently Star World came up with a “Viewer Partner Programme” on it’s Facebook page with 2,96,000+ fans. The whole idea is to get feedback from target audience so as to serve them with better content.

Star World has created a tab on it’s Facebook page with name “Viewer Partner Programme” which is basically an online form you need to fill to take part in the programme. It asks you for all kind of details like demographic info, choice of shows, educational qualification and occupation.

Based on the forms sent, Star World will get back to users it deems suitable as per their demographic requirement. It will send them emails of surveys which might help them get valuable insights on the channel and response on advertisements or promos. The programme will also invite its participants to take part in “Focussed Group Discussion” which will provide the opportunity to post and exchange information, reviews, ideas, opinions and views (“Postings”) with a view to evoke response(s) for the purpose of product testing, promo assessment and gauging popularity of a particular show on the Channel.

While this is brilliant step, I still am interested in knowing the real number of users who have signed up for this programme. But this is more about technicalities than the fact that it is probably one of it’s kind initiative taken by any TV Channel around the world.

Here are my views on why is this an important step?

  • It indicates a change in mindset of channels whose major target audience is youth.
  • Using digital media to gain insights about user’s choices is first step towards crowd-sourced television content.
  • Social media increases the reach by many folds and its right time when advertisers should also track social reactions to find out programs which are popular among youth.
  • This will encourage other channels and producers to take user feedback from online sources and create better programs.

What more should be done?

  • Real time reactions about programs can give more information about users likes/dislikes.
  • Competitive viewpoint is very important. So every channel should get information not only about it’s own shows but also about it’s competitive programs.
  • There should be more openness- Openness in the way data is collected and sold. Every party should be able to get all details related to viewership data. This will put pressure on channels to serve better and relevant content, give advertisers more freedom and will help producers gauge their investments in a better way.

There is a need of more such initiatives from Television channels and production houses. Social media and open platforms can really help the whole ecosystem, where TV channels could make viewers happy with better content and advertisers could clearly know how and where to advertise their stuff.

Do you agree?
