The Movers and Shakers of Indian Television is Back

Guess who is back… Indian Television’s very own Movers & Shakers – ‘Shekhar’ Suman. Yes, he is back with arguably the most memorable and popular Television Chat shows ever. Movers and Shakers is making a comeback after a decade. And this time it will be aired on SAB TV which will try to be on top of the Chat Show race in Indian Television. SAB TV is considered the Best Indian comedy channel, as it guarantees to be a complete family entertainment with Hindi comedy shows for all ages.

So where were we…? Oh right…Mr. Shekhar Suman! We all remember him as one of the judges of ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ show along with Navjot Singh Sidhu. This was first of its kind of stand-up comedy challenge shows on Indian television. However, he quit after the end of the third season apparently due to differences with his co-judge, Sidhu. He soon became the judge of a rival comedy program Comedy Circus. And he also had an association with SAB TV, when he hosted the show ‘Jab Khelo SAB Khelo’ on SAB TV. Also who can forget his dancing moves on Sony TV as a participant in ‘Jhalak Dikhla Ja’.

News is that Movers and Shakers will see Shekhar Suman focusing on the human aspects of the celebrities and their stories along with a set of ‘must see elements’, ‘street segments’ and a ‘common man’ segment at the end of each episode. No doubt it’s a cult show and a great platform to reconnect with the people as well as be the common man’s voice. There are also rumors that Anna Hazare might be one of the celebrity guests on the show. Well time will only tell if this is true or not.

So are you ready to move and shake your funny bone with Shekhar Suman !!! MOVERS AND SHAKERS which will be telecast on Monday to Friday at 10.30 pm beginning March 12, 2012. So send in your comments and reactions once the show goes on air.

Is Comedy Circus losing it’s popularity…..

Comedy Circus – A slight mention of the show can throw a person into fits of laughter, that’s how.  Comedy Circus is a reality-based stand up comedy show that brings the TV celebrities to perform with professional comedian partners on a highly competitive and challenging stage. No doubt that it has made a special place on Television, but somehow it’s getting a bit too predictable. It started way back in 2007 and since then, the show has provided a great platform for the artists and made them popular. There have been various judges that have come and gone on this show like  Satish Shah, Johny Lever, Shekhar Suman, Rohit Shetty, Ajay Jadeja, Tusshar Kapoor, Daler Mehndi  and  Sohail Khan . But Archana Puran Singh has been an integral and a permanent part of the show since day one and is still going strong in 2012 as well.

Comedy Circus has been successful in terms of entertaining the television audience for years and has tried to get in a new concept season after season. Following is the list of Seasons that they have come up with:

–  Comedy Circus 1

– Comedy Circus 2

–  Kaante Ki Takkar

–  Comedy Circus – Chinchpokli To China

–  Comedy Circus 20 – 20

–  Dekh India Dekh

–  Comedy Circus 3 Ka Tadka

–  Maha Sangram

–  Comedy Circus Ke SuperStars

–  Comedy Circus Ka Jadoo

–  Jubilee Comedy Circus

–  Comedy Circus Ke Taansen

– Comedy Circus Ka Naya Daur

– Kahani Comedy Circus Ki

You might say that it’s an exhaustive list for a format that has been around since around 5 years. After every season one gets a feeling of what next? What will they name the next season?  What new flavors will keep the audience glued? Who will replace the judge? (Not Archana) 😉

Episode after episode, you might think what will Kapil perform next, will Krushna  and Sudesh Lehri bring in something new? Will Rajeev Thakur be able to create the same magic that he had in the previous seasons? These are just a few questions that you might ask. Somehow the show is getting a bit too predictable and ending up losing its grip on the television audience. No doubt  it’s a show which uses improvisation, and all forms of humor in order to make the people laugh but do you think it’s time for them to come up with something new and unique in order to get the audience back smiling.

Where is the humor? (Comedy shows drying up on Indian TV)

If you are also not able to find humor in our comedy shows then you are definitely in the category where people are waiting for good and ‘clean’ comedy on Indian television and if you have already find it then please share what I am missing. Oh yes… and if in case you ask me to switch on to latest shows on SAB TV then I agree there are two or three good shows which are worth giving time like Taarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashmah and recently launched R.K. Laxman Ki Duniya. However all the remaining shows fail to impress even a bit.

Apparently the Indian Television industry was expected to grow over 500 billion by the end of 2011 and currently it has over 500 channels broadcasted. But I still find dearth of substance in our tv shows. For example comedy shows which are my all time favourite are definitely way too below the level of good comedy or sitcom shows. Let us take a look at the journey of Indian television in terms of comedy shows in last 28 years.

Yeh Jo hai Zindagi was India’s first sitcom aired in 1984 on Doordarshan. The show written by comedy writer Sharad Joshi was such a huge hit that even box-office openings in cinemas were affected due to the airing of the show because it aired on Friday nights. Then came the ‘era’ in 1993 of two most widely admired comedy shows ever in the history of Indian television: Dekh Bhai Dekh and Zabaan Sambhalke. I am sure that these two names certainly brings a big smile on everyone’s face and those unforgettable characters like Balraj Diwan (Navin Nischol), Samir Diwan (Shekhar Suman), Gareema (Deven Bhojani), Mohan Bharti (Pankaj Kapoor) and many other became an integral part of our lives. Within two years Doordarshan launched another hilarious comedy Srimaan Srimati in 1995 that gave India one of its favourite characters ‘Dilruba’. Simultaneously Zee TV launched its most popular comedy show till date Hum Paanch in 1995. Another hit show Padosan was launched on DD Metro in 1998. All these have left a legacy behind them and I can’t find any show matching up to their level currently or in these all years.

In modern day classics i can count Office Office easily which was launched in 2001 on SAB TV. This hugely popular and admired sitcom was based on corruption and bribery in public offices. The story revolved around Mussadilal (Bollywood actor Pankaj Kapoor) who was often harshly greeted by the corrupt officials. “Mussadilal” was the favourite character of viewers for a very long period and we remember him fresh as ever even now.

Now coming back to today’s topic of this post “Why comedy shows are drying up on Indian television”? Honestly after all these years finally in 2005 I thought that there is a chance that Indian comedy can get back to track when a new reality comedy show “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge” was launched. The Star One’s laughter show won millions of hearts and before we knew there were four seasons in their kitty. The laughter challenge gave way to all these shows on “Comedy Circus” that are aired on Sony TV regularly. However the quality of the comedians and their so called “punches” has deteriorated immensely. In terms of another blogger whose post I read the other day “the contestants of these shows grew up with time and became big-time perverts”. The reality comedy shows today are nothing but a sign toward the hypocrisy of Indian television that call these laughter shows full of double-meaning jokes family shows.

So what is the exact reason? Are we short of good comedy writers, or we are short of good character artists who can do good comedy or it is just the mindset that is not able to accept some clean and good talent? Tell us your views if you have answer to these questions. 🙂

What do Roadies, Bigg Boss, Emotional Atyachaar, Spiltsvilla, Comedy Circus have in common?

Whenever I even think about reality shows in India I can only think about getting embarrassed if I have to watch them with my parents. Yes, that is the bitter reality of reality shows and that’s what I’m going to talk about today [I’ll still end up on a positive note about few “healthy” reality shows which are on-air].

The first show that comes to my mind (and eyes, ear, tongue) is obviously Bigg Boss Season 5 as this is currently the most controversial and over-hyped reality show famous for its not-so-famous celebrities (amazing isn’t). The show has recently received lot of flak from its viewers as the 10 days old season have only one male contestant this time with 13 female contestants. Very interestingly one of the female contestants, Sonika Kaliraman recently made a voluntary exit as she couldn’t take the chaotic atmosphere in the show with all the cat fights among other housemates. iDubba also posted a tweet about the same on 3rd October, just after a day Bigg Boss was launched and proved clearly that these shows are indeed scripted to get attention and apparently gain TRPs. The show has now got another male contestant actor Amar Upadhyay to give company to Shakti Kapoor, the solo male member in the house. Of course we can expect more male contestants coming in with its “wild card” entries. The show has always been in debate as they keep or remove any contestant to manage their TRPs.

Emotional Atyachaar is another show that has raised some eyebrows as they have shown adultery and disloyalty to an extent that I can’t remember even one episode where the so called “Suspect” came out clean. It is funny how my couple friends talk about their relationship and say to each other in a rather light manner-

Don’t you dare go anywhere without informing me otherwise I will have EMOTIONAL ATYACHAAR test conducted on you

Roadies (Roadies season-9 coming soon) and Splitsvillaon MTV were few of my favourites that I followed religiously. However these shows have depicted violence, ensuing abuses, inappropriate sexual content so much in the last few seasons that I can’t remember when I switched to MTV Channel last time to tune in to these shows.

Language is another problem that these reality shows have these days. I remember switching to Comedy Circus ka Naya Daurthat is aired on SONY channel currently when I was having a nice Sunday breakfast with my dad. The obscene language and remarks used by the contestants, which is supposedly aim to make others laugh, made me leave the room with a disgust feeling for the show. I missed the clean and wonderful jokes that the original “Laughter Challenge” had, that gave us some incredible stand up comedians like Sunil Pal, Ahsaan Qureshi, Raju Srivastava and Bhagwant Mann.

There was one positive impact that I could find was that there are few dating shows that have helped LGBT community by featuring gay couples and showcasing to Indian society that we need to come out of our mind shackles soon.

In midst of all these shows I could find one show, Axe ur Ex on Channel V that I can enjoy with a great laugh and without worrying about obscenity. This show has concept of irritating (to hell) the ex boyfriend/girlfriend with some great ideas that are harmless and fun to watch.

There are many popular shows that sell and cash on adultery, violence, sex and fraud. Most of the reality shows in India are poor imitation of their foreign counterparts from where the ideas are adopted and used blindly in India. These fail to gain TRPs normally and thus thrive on controversies and scripted plots. However if we look closer we can definitely have shows with less embarrassment for us to watch along with parents or kids.

Any one who wants to play Devil’s advocate here?
