Is “The Dirty Picture” too Dirty for Indian Television?

“For unavoidable reasons we regret to inform that the film ‘The Dirty Picture’ will not be telecast today. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted’.  This is the ticker that was being aired by SONY Television for the audience. Is Dirty Picture too dirty for Indian Television? Well let’s find out the exact story and the real issue for this mess.

The much-awaited television premiere of “The Dirty Picture” was scheduled to be aired at Sunday noon and 8 pm on SONY. But the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting asked for the telecast timing to be revised to a slot after 11 pm. Well The Dirty Picture, which is reportedly based on the life of southern actress Silk Smitha, had undergone 56 cuts before being issued a U/A certification by the censor board. And the irony is that this move by the government comes even as the channel had secured a clearance from the Bombay High Court on Saturday for the airing of the film. Strange, right?

This movie was advertised for close to a month prior to its telecast on television, but it seems that the movie is too dirty for the Indian Television Audience. Did you know that Sony had made 36 voluntary cuts and 26 compulsory cuts to make it suitable for broadcast on television and had obtained a U/A certification for broadcast? So do you really think that the India Television is not yet ready for such a bold movie? Well not long ago there was a lot of debate about “Sach Ka Saamna” and this was made into a political debate. And the channel had to shift the show to 11pm slot. So this might not be new to the audience, and one might have started to live with the fact that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has the final say in any matter.

You might find it ironical that “The Dirty Picture” has won 3 National awards, Yes 3 National Awards. Best Make Up Artist: Vijram Gaekwad, Best Costume Design: Niharika Khanand Best Actress: Vidya Balan. And one fine day you hear that this movie is not fit to be aired on National Television!! Amazing right!!! Well time will only say who will win this strange battle.

So what do you think about this unique decision and would you like this movie to be aired at Prime Time slot?

Happy Viewing 😉 (Not “The Dirty Picture“)

Filmmakers are no longer afraid of IPL!!

Sounds strange, right? You might have seen Bollywood all over the IPL Opening Ceremony, so why are we talking about Filmmakers vs IPL? Well, IPL started from Wednesday April 4 and runs till May 27 – With nine teams and 76 games across 12 locations. So will Bollywood manage to get attention of the audience during this period? Well only time will say who wins this Summer Slam?

From the last few seasons of IPL, Bollywood has really a tough time in the summers. Considering IPL as a threat, filmmakers had either postponed/preponed their films or preferred not to release in that period. Not only small films even the big budgeted or the big star cast or the heavily anticipated films opted to stay away from IPL. However the scene is not same any more. 2012 will see maximum releases in these 2 months.

Following is the list of movies that are all set to catch your attention and might make you skip some of the IPL Action:

– Sajid Nadiadwala’s ‘Housefull2‘ (April 6)

– Actor John Abraham’s maiden home production ‘Vicky Donor‘ (April 20)

– Viacom 18 Motion Pictures’ ‘Bittoo Boss‘ (April 20)

– Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Ferrai Ki Sawari‘ (April 27)

– Priyadarshan’s action-thriller ‘Tezz‘ (April 27)

– Emraan Hashmi-starrer ‘Jannat 2‘ (May 4)

– Karisma Kapoor’s comeback film ‘Dangerous Ishq‘ (May 11)

– Yash Raj Films ‘Ishaqzaade‘ (May 18)

– And finally Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Department‘ (May 18)

Here are some analysis of the movies that were released during the previous seasons of IPL :

During the first three IPL seasons Bollywood was hit hard  and year 2008 saw the release of big films like Tashan, Bhoothnath and Jannat . However Jannat was the only movie that was successful. And in 2009 Bollywood did not have any big releases. But in 2010 there were enough releases but it was only Balaji Motion Pictures Love Sex Aur Dhokha (LSD) that emerged successful.  However, the fourth season of IPL and year 2011 saw a turnaround for Bollywood. The filmmakers dared to take on IPL and films like F.A.L.T.U, Dum Marro Dum, Shor in the City,  Ragini MMS,  Haunted 3D did some good business.

So who will be the real winner? Are filmmakers now ready to overcome the fear of IPL? Or will IPL 5 make a dent at the Box Office? In short it’s a double Dhamaka during the summer vacation season for all. Do let us know your views about this unique competition.

Satellite rights game…. Who is the real winner??

Imagine that you come to know that the most recent movie that you saw in a movie hall last week is about to be aired on television in a month” time… How do you feel about it??

Well, gone are those days when you had to wait for months and months before you get a chance to watch a new movie on television. It’s the latest trend on television these days. Honestly, in my opinion both the audience and the director are the real winners and not to forget the channel that airs these movies. The channels do mint loads of money as they get maximum viewers watching their channel and no doubt sponsors make it even bigger. They get chance to showcase their latest serials to the audience.

Let me give you an example, I might not watch ZTV and its daily soaps, but as you know that ZTV has bought the satellite rights of Don 2 for 37 crores. Yes you read it right… 37 crores. , so when they air Don 2, during the break, they will show the promos of their daily soaps, and this is when they get a chance to attract new viewers for their shows. Isn’t it interesting!!!! Not only this, the directors too get some return on the investment even before the movie is released. According to some experts, the TV satellite rights market has grown more than 10 times in the last decade alone. “Big flicks bring channels high TRPs and bumper ad revenue. This also gives a chance to the television audience to watch a movie in this living room with his entire family.”

So are you excited to watch the daily soaps 😉 just kidding. So are you excited to know which channel is in the game of buying movie satellite rights…. here you go

  • Sony Entertainment Television has inked a deal for four movie blockbusters including the super hit ‘The Dirty Picture’. (Amount not disclosed)
  • Zee acquires satellite rights of Don 2 for Rs. 37 crores
  • The satellite rights of `Agneepath` have been sold to Zee for Rs 41 crore
  • `Krrish 3` has been sold for Rs 37 crore to Star TV
  • Sony Entertainment supposedly paid 40 crore for Aamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor’s Movie “Taalash”

So are you going to watch Agneepath in a Movie Hall or in your living room!!!!  So let us know your views on this latest trend 😉

Happy Viewing.

Want to be the 4th Idiot!!

Everyone of us specially students know about Mr Biswaroop Roy Chowdhary, and for those few who don’t,let me tell u,he  has earned the reputation of “Guinness world record holder in memory” by beating Germany’s Michaela Buchvaldova’s world record by recalling 14 randomly selected birth dates with names in same order in 2 minutes on 20 July,2006 at Hotel Le Meridian, Delhi before all prominent print and electronic media. A Production Engineer from Punjab Engineering College , Biswaroop is featured in the Limca Book of Records as the‘National Memory Record holder’ and as the inventor of memory pen known as ‘Mnemonic Pen’ to enhance memory.Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury holds World Wide Patent for his inventions – Memory Lab, Mnemonic Pen, Happiness Machine & Animated Cosmic Energy Card (ACEC) and his name is mentioned in Oxford University’s official website for his contribution in the filed of memory training. He has conducted more than 2000 seminars internationally addressing more than 10 lakh audience.  Owing to the controvery over  his new upcoming  animation film The 4th IDIOT, Mr Chowdhary is now in limelight, as he planned the premiere of The 4th IDIOT ,an animation Film, on My 9 2010.

The Movie 4th Idiot continues form the end of the blockbuster movie Three idiots,at the school of Phunsuk Wangdu. It throws some light on the fact  that if Phunsuk Wangdu was the school principal then what will that school be like?.It is the story of a boy, Pappu who, by using the techniques taught by Ranchordas Chanchar in 3 IDIOTS achieved his otherwise seemingly unachievable goals like getting 1st position in school, winning his dream girl and even going to the moon. With two melodious songs and narration by Chatur Ramalingam of 3 IDIOTS (Omi Vaidya), it is not only entertaining but also a journey to our brain to understand its hidden potential. In the process of watching the movie the audience will learn important life skills. Omi Vaidya has not only anchored the movie THE 4TH IDIOT but also sung a song.It seems that the actor Om Vaidya is also not spared .He has  found himself in the middle of a controversy. Vaidya, who shot to fame owing to his stint as Chatur in filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 3 Idiots, has now lent his voice to the  film the  4th  Idiots, which has come under fire by Vidhu Vinod  Chopra for copyright infringement.

Chopra had sent a  legal notice to Chowdhury, accusing him of making a film with an uncanny resemblance to 3 Idiots. The notice asks Chowdhury to immediately cease or desist any sort of advertisement, promotion or publicising of the film.Chopra later also obtained a stay order to stall the premier of the film in Lucknow

Vaidya, meanwhile, says, “Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Raju Hirani (3 Idiots director) are the two people I owe my career and my popularity to. I’d never want to do anything that could cause either of them a moment’s distress.”

He adds that he had no clue he was signing up for a film titled 4 Idiots, “I was approached for an educational animated film to help students. The aim was to reduce student suicides. All I’ve done is lent my voice to a character called Pappu. There was no title when I lent my voice about two months ago. This is a non commercial venture… I guess my voice is distinctive and probably would add some entertainment to the learning.”

Chowdhury, on his part, says, “I guess Mr Chopra has little less understanding about the copyright law, which is evident by the controversy that revolved around his film. And now he is doing the same with my film by sending such a notice. I have not done anything wrong and all the legalities related to our film are in place. I shall send Mr Chopra a reply by Monday morning. Films always derive inspiration from something, and ours is inspired from 3 Idiots. But it’s certainly not copied.”

Hope this is not again a publicity stunt, which has become a part of marketing these days, anyway how does it matter, if the film has something to give to their audiences.Hope this film helps students to cope withe pressure  related to studies.(Saurav Thakur)
