Ignorance is or is not bliss (How to combat global warming).

The famous english poet ,Thomas Gray once said “ignorance is bliss”.One has to wonder if he is right.Ignorance is actually a condition of being uneducated, uninformed or unaware .It follows that being unaware of a particular situation or thing will make a person happier. So how come more people aren’t happier?.
Ignorance is bliss or ignorance is not bliss depends entirely on situations .Suppose in some circumstances its best that we don’t know so much.I guess if we knew about people who hated us and disliked us and wanted to hurt us that would only make us worry a lot and feel unimportant. So its best  not knowing  about these people and their thoughts and feelings ,also if we knew about what some food were made from (like sausages for example) we might not eat them , so in this case ignorance is certainly bliss.
But what if we  don’t pay attention to small things like:-
we should:
Drive smart ,keep our car maintained, avoid excess idling, walk, carpool whenever possible.Invest in power saving devices.Switch to renewable energy and encourage others to do the same.Use less hot water and the list goes on.and on.
if u simply search in google “N no of ways to stop global Warming”.

The main idea is that ignorance is not bliss when you completely ignore your irresponsible behaviour with respect to Global Warming. We are so busy with the flow  and tantrums of our life that  we forget every now and then, that we are creating problems for ourselves by ignoring this issue. I don’t want to list the ways to combat Global Warming ,but would like to emphasize on the fact that its high time time that we had done something, no matter how small the step appears to be.

We can see the shit like Shoaib and Sania’s wedding  umpteen times in news, which celebrity joined twitter that day, but when it comes to see the real issue(the issue that we are disrespecting the gift given by our Mother Earth )we start to look a given horse in the mouth, blaming everyone except yourself. If we don’t curb the climate change and the potential effects that comes with it , we are going to have more problems than Tiger Wood’s marriage. In fact few extramarital transgressions will be the least of our problems because the greatest transgression of all will be too great to reverse -The Pollution of our planet!.

The reason of my not writing ways to curb the Global Warming  is simply because , i know almost everyone of us have read, surfed the net ,watched a fantastic presentation regarding the environmental issue. But the only thing that lacked was the  sustained motivation.

But i found a ray of hope when  i came accross an idea posted by Arog in http://www.creativitypool.com  .he says that

” As trees are one of the most efficient “carbon-storers”, lowering the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and thereby helping to prevent a global climate catastrophe, federal, state and local governments should give tax breaks to those who either plant and/or conserve trees on their properties. This could come in the form of reduced taxes; perhaps a reduced property tax for homeowners whose property has a certain minimum density of trees per 1/4 acre, and reduced taxes (or even subsidies) to businesses or organizations which own and conserve forested land or grow trees which produce food (fruit, nuts, maple syrup, etc.).”

Yes it would be a good idea if government were to motivate its fellow citizens .Ofcourse it should be well planned, and i see no reason to reject this fabulous idea.If  the government can spend 5.2 crores for Kasab’s security, then this idea is worth implementing.

It is said that ” The pen is  mightier than the sword, but i say the reader is mightier than the lord “

So my friends its a humble request  to you , who are probably reading this ,please promote this article  as much as you can, who knows one day Sonia Gandhi will come to read this by chance and pick up this idea, probably just few days before the election.

Aamir Khan has a hot shot Resume for Marketing Post

It looks like Aamir is preparing himself for a top class Job offer after his Bollywood Career. Why? Well, his out-of-box marketing strategies must be catching the eyes of top class media honchos and who knows he might be having some offers already. On this Business Blog it makes sense to have a look at some of the aspects of Marketing and relate it to the skills and strategies of Aamir Khan.

Aspect 1: Understanding Market

If Ghajini meant reaching out to all type of Audience and meeting people who are going crazy about Aamir’s looks, ‘3Idiots’ means catching college students who most probably have read “Five Point Someone”.

That’s a very critical lesson from marketing point of view- Start promoting the product from a small group which is able to embrace the ‘idea’ behind the product without actually getting access to real product. Remember what iPhone did?

Role of Media in Global Warming reduction

Recent spurt in Global Warming related news across media has put it in the limelight! Now everyone in household has started talking about it, and that too in a serious tone. In my opinion this is a very important development, as fight against Global warming can’t succeed unless common people understand the ill effects of same.

For past 12 years (since Kyoto protocol in 1997) Governments from all over the world are trying to blame each other rather than taking any major step to reduce emissions. The choice is difficult- Growth or Climate?

Since for any Government it’s very important to keep the economy stable in short term (5-10 years), it’s not an easy thing to choose climate over growth. No one has understood this yet, and now we are again going to have Copenhagen Summit, which will probably lead to similar results as of Kyoto.

So what’s the solution? Should our Government just sit and watch what’s happening? Well, they still are doing nothing different! My point is Government should take a secondary role here. Primary role has to be taken up by media. There is only one way Global warming can be reduced- by making common people well aware of the situation and taking individual steps to slowly reduce this effect. I know it’s difficult but it seems to be the only logical solution. Because for a Govt to confidently back any major carbon reduction solution, it would need support from its voters.

Recently many news channels have taken up this topic very enthusiastically for various reasons, but results are visible. I met one Industrialist who even wanted to have one windmill setup, as he saw some great future for green energy in India. From India TV (which has large fan base in rural India) to CNN-IBN (best urban news channel) every channel is proactively broadcasting shows which make user aware of Global warming. But I’m yet to find any show which can teach common people how to individually contribute in reducing carbon footprint. Last week’s “Brunch” from HT mentioned some entrepreneurs and talked about their individual efforts and ways to reduce global warming. One of the methods can be to buy Carbon credits and make your small events carbon free.

Other show which is very timely showcased is Discovery’s “Project Earth”. This show describes some of the Geo Engineering methods which can become the ultimate solution to all Global Warming woes. But they can also be hazardous to environment, since they can bring serious environmental changes on a large scale.

Media has started doing its bit to reduce Global warming, let’s hope that this war continues till we see a solution coming or till Carbon burns the whole planet! Choice is ours.

Indian magazine section gets hotter!

9dot9-logo-2008sep18In line with this Blog post I wrote, there is another addition to the rapidly expanding magazine market in India (60 new magazines were launched in India in past one year). 9.9 Media has launched EDU- A monthly magazine costing Rs. 150 and targeting India’s higher education sector.

India’s higher education needs such attention because of some of the unique problems it faces- lack of quality institutes, old policies, reservations, lack of focus for students, lack of knowledge for career growth etc. EDU aims to solve some of these problems through a neutral and reliable platform. They will circulate the first 60-page issue to 5000 leaders in higher education across India.

The magazine will include sections such as Academics, Administration, Technology, Profile, Strategy and Updates from the sector and columns by well known academicians and visionaries. But more than this the real challenge as per me would be to decide on the marketing channel for spreading awareness among target audience.

They should combine internet and direct referral marketing to reach the audience. Since this a niche section and major magazine readers in India are from higher income group (business and technology), it would be a challenge for EDU to make right audience stick to the title.

BSNL to provide Free talktime for running ads of your choices on Mobile

In first of its kind of move, BSNL is launching an ad service where Users can choose to run ads over their GPRS enabled phones and can earn FREE talk time in return.

Users just need to dial 51235 or login to BSNL’s website to choose for the ad categories for which they would like to see ads.

This is very much similar to MGinger and other services, but real killer here is the instant free recharge! Users would be more willing to use this service because of direct benefit.

BSNL has a history of taking good initiatives but then losing on the same in longer run. Let’s see how other competitors replicate this idea.

Creative Marketing and innovative service offering: What more is there from DoCoMo?

The viral which generated quite a fuzz has put brand “DoCoMo” right at front on consumer’s mind. In fact, the brand awareness is so strong that you will find people speaking of DoCoMo without even knowing what exactly it is. DoCoMo is a GSM service from Tata’s stable and has applied innovative ideas both in media marketing and it’s service offerings. It currently operates in 8 circles across country and that may be the reason why people are still unaware of the real product. But still, the brand image of DoCoMo raises a lot of expectations in term of its innovative services.

The first offering which is unique is “pay-per-second” for call charges and “pay-per-text” for sms charges. Even though “pay-per-second” service can’t be termed as a new service (as it was launched way back in 2003 by BPL Mobile), the way it’s marketed by DoCoMo is very impressive. But there are other small and really effective services which are on offer-

  • Very cheap “pre pay” GPRS packs, which provide GPRS services for as low as Rs 15 for 20 MB download limit for 3 days and a Rs 95 pack for 100 MB download for 30 days. Very cheap as compared to my current idea plan (Rs 150 monthly for 30 MB download L).
  • A “Timed SMS” service which can send SMS to recipients at desired date and time.
  • Not charging users for first 30 seconds when they are listening from a list of “ring tones” before actually downloading any. Very good indeed, as initial IVR just takes keypad information to get us to the right track list and shouldn’t be charged, ethically.
  • They are launching various customer experience zones like “Dive In”, where user can compare Mobile handsets from various vendors and choose the right one as per the need. We already have stores like MobileNXT and the MobileStore in India and what experience “Dive in” will offer is something yet to be seen.
  • They have also launched a service “Geo Fencing” which can track people and aware concerned persons if the route of any vehicle carrying the person is diverted. This may be really effective for School children when they are travelling.
  • DoCoMo has really done well to create a good first impression and with all these services coming up, their offering looks promising. Digital advertisement has also been very impressive (2000 facebook fans and twitter followers). Do you think they can stand such media hype in the time to come?

    Media makes Gandhiji’s anniversary memorable!

So, finally we had at least 3 media friendly reasons to remember Gandhiji’s anniversary this year. In past, we mostly had a Gandhiji movie and some news gossips about Bapu. So what made me write this post ‘TODAY’? It’s simply because this is the first time when I heard about Gandhiji’s anniversary 4-5 times a day through different media-

    Google Doodle:

This was BIG. The first thing we usually do every morning is open a browser and hit Google. I was amazed by the Google’s  Doodle this time, featuring Gandiji over the prominent G-Letter and it looked perfect. In fact, I think this was one of the very bests of Google’s doodle! I saw this news spreading like wildfire over Facebook and other blog sites and was one of the best reason for so many internet savvy people to know about him on this day.

    Montblanc’s 11 lakh Pen:

There was this other news 2 days back where Montblanc announced the launch of a luxury pen on Gandhiji’s jayanti. The pen costs whopping 11 lac Rupees and they just have 241 pens (Inspired by his 241 Mile Dandi March). This was a bit controversial as people also said that Gandhiji always led a simple life and such high profile fashion pen doesn’t suit his kind of style. Whatever the reason, we remembered him one way or other :).

    Shashi Tharur’s comment:

Later in the day India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor sparked off a debate on whether Gandhiji’s birthday should be a public holiday.  He said “Gandhiji always said that work is worship and hence we should also fulfill our responsibilities on this day!” Controversial enough, this also raged a roar over Facebook, Twitter and Blogs.

Overall a media friendly day for Gandhiji, he remains India’s most famous icon even on his 140th birthday.

After “Sach ka Saamna” its “Pati Patni aur woh” in trouble

It seems Channels would go to any extent to woo TV viewers- even if it involves playing with a young child’s mind.

Recently launched “Pati, Patni aur Woh” which is an adaptation of  “Baby Borrowers” has run into problems with National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). The show makes very young children stay with non-biological parents who are not going to be there after the show is over. This may affect a child’s mind.

Before this “Sach Ka Saamna” was another show which was axed by Govt. due to its psychic nature. Its apparent that producers make these shows before doing an exhaustive testing and analyzing the effects on a person’s life!

I’m not complaining against any show or producers associated with them. It’s just that we live in a country of different culture and moral values, and broadcasters should respect the same while adapting any show from west!

A Chinese daily blaming Indian Media- can you digest that?

china-daily-fpToday, I read that how a Chinese news paper has accused Indian media of sending wrong signals w.r.t to the current border dispute with China. Its very awkward that a Chinese news paper is telling us how to behave. I found this absurd, but at the same time somewhere my mind was saying that it may be a fact. This is what The China daily wrote “instead of informing, inspiring and trying to find the truth, it is trying to throttle professional ethics to raise the war rhetoric and sow seeds of enmity between the two peoples”.

On any normal day I’d simply reject this qoute out of my self respect for my country and my media. But days are not the same any more (that’s what my other self said)! I have even written many posts in the same line- blaiming Indian media for becoming too irresponsible and even fake to some extent. Hence, at this point in time I couldn’t simply reject any quote out of intuition. I needed to rethink on what The Chine Daily qouted.

There are actually 3 sides of this story and I honestly couldn’t decide which one is correct or logical, so I’ll just present them here-

    1. Case -I: The China Daily is correct in both its intentions and content. This means that China really wants have a peaceful and healthy relationship with India and also; Chinese media wants that Indian media shouldn’t play the spoil sport during this process.

But somehow I think this is just too much to ask for, from China :)!

    2. Case-II: The China Daily is correct in its intentions but may not be in the content. In such a case China wants to show itself in good light, and what better a medium to showcase that using the print media itself. Here, Indian media has a lesson to learn and things to prove. Indian media should come forward showing evidences and facts behind the story they have published till date. If that’s the scenario, am I asking too much from Indian media :)?

    3. Case-III: The China Daily is incorrect in both its intentions and content. This theory will actually put The China Daily in the devil’s position as against the Indian media (which Chinese media is trying to do). This would mean- its actually the Chinese media which is trying to hide the true facts that the border is actually been crossed by Chinese troups. And they are blaming Indian media intentionally to present their country in good light even when they know that they are wrong in both their intentions and the facts behind the story.

I don’t know why but now my other-self is leaning more towards the facts presented in case III :). What do you say?
